The Issue of Shatm-e-Rasool (Abuse of the Prophet)

I have written a book, Shatm-e-Rasul, or The Issue of Abuse of the Prophet. I have explained in the book that nobody provides arguments from the Quran or Hadith in this matter. This is a communal phenomenon which instigates communal passions. It has no relation to Islam. Those who kill people in the name of insult of the Prophet are themselves criminals and will be held responsible before God. People need to be given freedom to speak and write whatever they want. You can diasagree with them by presenting arguments. A written statement should be given in return for a written statement. A book in return for a book. A speech in return for a speech. An article in return for an article. It is extremely wrong to take out swords or pull out guns in response to someone's book. This has no relation to Islam.

The law of shatm-e-rasul, or abuse of the Prophet, is baseless. There is no such thing as insult or disrespect of the Prophet. All these terms are bidat, or innovation. It was in Spain that an incident was first termed disrespect of the Prophet. This didn’t happen at the time of the Prophet. It happened in the period of the Umayyad dynasty. Disrespect or insult of the Prophet is not a crime. This has been made a crime by Muslims themselves. When the Prophet was alive, his opponents would address him as 'the condemned one'. There was no greater insult than this. The Prophet was addressed as the condemned one while he was alive. The Quran mentions that people would say: وَقَالُوا يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِي نُزِّلَ عَلَيْهِ الذِّكْرُ إِنَّكَ لَمَجْنُونٌ (15.6) You to whom the Quran has been sent, you are most surely insane.

You are a soothsayer and magician. (10.2) Is this not insult? The words tauheen and ihanat, meaning insult, are an innovation in religion. They have no relation to Islam. Those who speak in such terms are wrong. This is undoubtedly sinful. If someone publishes a cartoon or a book, Muslims seek to kill him because he has insulted the Prophet. This is undoubtedly an innovation in religion. Those who speak in such terms are doing sin and will be held responsible before God. The person who publishes a cartoon or a book will not be responsible, but Muslims who seek to kill him will be held responsible in God's eyes. This is entirely un-Islamic. This behaviour has no relation to Islam. I have written a book, Shatm-e-Rasul, or The Issue of Abuse of the Prophet.
